Why Read Newly-Created Stories?
If your main desire in Learning Greek is to be able to read the New Testament, it may seem pointless to read silly stories that aren't even historical Koine texts. So why bother?
Fictional stories in Greek are a great tool for increasing your reading and speaking ability. They can be enjoyable and are capable of injecting some freshness into the learning process.
Such stories also honestly assess your comprehension of the language since they contain new and potentially unexpected content. It's easy to over assess your understanding of the language when you only read texts whose content you are already familiar with (like the Bible!).
Another helpful aspect of original stories is that they can be written to reinforce specific vocabulary as desired. Stories can be composed to focus on certain semantic domains, like colors, animals, places in the city, etc.
Example Story:
Ἀνὴρ ἐν Καισαρείᾳ
Ἀνήρ τις ἦν ἐν Καισαρείᾳ τῇ παρὰ θάλασσαν. Ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἀνδρέας. Οὗτος ὁ ἀνὴρ ἠθέλησεν γράφειν καινὸν λόγον περὶ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ.
Τίνι δὲ ἡμέρᾳ, εἶπεν πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ· Δεῖ με εὑρεῖν πάπυρον ἵνα γράψω τὸν λόγον ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἔδωκέν μοι γράψαι.Ἡ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Πορεύου εἰς τὸν τόπον ὅπου οἱ ἄνθρωποι πωλοῦσιν πολλά, εἰς τὴν ἀγοράν.
Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Ἀνδρέας ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου καὶ ἐπορεύετο διὰ τῶν πλατειῶν τῆς πόλεως. Πολλοὶ ἄνθρωποι ἦσαν ἐν ταῖς πλατείαις, οἱ μὲν ἐργαζόμενοι, οἱ δὲ περιπατοῦντες.
Ὅτε δὲ ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν ἀγορὰν εἶδεν ἄνδρα ἔχοντα πολὺν πάπυρον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Χαίρε, ἀδελφέ. Ζητῶ πάπυρον καλὸν ἵνα γράψω λόγον. Ὁ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη· Ἔχω πάπυρον ἀγαθὸν καὶ καινόν. Δὸς μοι ἀργύριον καὶ λήμψῃ αὐτόν. Ὁ δὲ ἔδωκεν τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸν πάπυρον. Καὶ ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον χαίρων μεγάλως.
Καὶ εἰσελθών εἰς τὸν οἶκον εἶπεν τῇ γυναικὶ· Ἰδοὺ εὗρον πάπυρον καλόν. Νῦν δύναμαι γράφειν τὸν λόγον ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἔθηκεν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ μου. Καὶ ἐκάθισεν ὁ Ἀνδρέας καὶ ἤρξατο γράφειν· Μέγας ὁ θεὸς...
